Spike and the UFC counter Elite XC’s Upcoming TV Event
May 7, 2008
We all know the UFC is never to be outdone. Dana White hates losing or being outshined and for the most part that’s a good thing for all the UFC and MMA fans out there. Elite XC’s CBS TV event is coming up soon, slated for May 31st and of course will be featuring the highly controversial fighter Kimbo Slice. The UFC has announced today that they will be airing a homage to fan favorite and ex light heavyweight champion Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell at the same time as the Elite XC airing.
The 3 hour broadcast featuring the iceman, will go on at 8 P.M. Eastern and Pacific and will air untill 11. Elite XC: Primetime will be airing at 9 P.M. Eastern and Pacific time and will end at 11 P.M. The homage to Chuck will feature an hour long documentary on him, it covers his career in the UFC and will showcase some of his life outside the cage as well, which some fans may find interesting. The lineup will also include Chuck’s bout against Wanderlei Silva which happened not to long ago at UFC 79. It will be the first time the PPV will be seen on cable TV so fans that missed that or want to see it again are in for a treat there. All this MMA goodness will begin with “Ultimate Knockouts 4” Many of Chuck’s crowd pleasing knockouts can be found in there.
Elite XC is hoping to make it big with the first ever airing of a live MMA event on primetime TV. Kimbo versus Thompson will headline the event with a middleweight championship bout to boot. Champion Robbie Lawler will be defending his title against the dangerous Scott Smith.
So better late then never, or not at all for that matter. This UFC homage seems to have been put together rather hastily in order to take away some of CBS and Elite XC’s viewers. There is no secret about how much disdain the UFC and Elite XC have for eachother. It could be that the UFC is feeling threatened as well, if the Elite XC gets even a fraction of the expected viewers on May 31st they will overshadow any viewer numbers the UFC has ever had on Spike. The reason for that is simple though, Spike is on cable tv so less people have the channel to begin with. Could we be seeing the start of a power struggle between to big name MMA corporations here? Will the fans remain loyal to the UFC and Dana White? We’ll see after May 31st.

Got something to say?

Watch a documentary or a fight? No contest - watch the fight. I like Chuck, he’s great but I’ll be watching the fight. Really, does Dana White think that a group of guys are gonna sit around and watch a documentary? Get real.
UFC can keep their “Homage” as I will be enjoying some live fight action for free.
I dont trust Dana after wasting my time with that Tito boxing non-event, I like Chuck too but I dont think I would see anything really new, boring, bring me fights.
Come on Dana! You want to compete with EliteXC with that bullshit. Why waste our time watching something we’ve seen on UFC Unleashed 8 million times already!
