Frank Shamrock to Undergo Surgery Today

March 31, 2008

For those that missed the EliteXC Strikeforce co promotion recently, Frank Shamrock lost the bout to fan favorite Cung Le due to doctor stoppage. Seems Frank blocked a kick and broke his right forearm in the process. He was admitted to San Jose’s Valley Medical Centre early last night. It’s being reported his arm was snapped in two, Frank was in a great deal of pain after the kick and could not continue on the bell for the fourth round. It appears the surgery he will be undergoing is to put a metal plate in his arm to hold it together. Oddly enough Franks wife Amy, thought she was going into Labor during his fight, she was admitted to the same hospital with Frank where it was determined she was having a false alarm. Frank is expecting his second child in early may.

Cung Le now holds the Strikeforce middleweight championship belt, he also holds a very impressive record of 7 wins 0 losses. The fight was fairly even throughout with both men landing good blows, Le with numerous kicks and Shamrock with jabs and some knees. The fight was exciting and intense and the crowd loved it, fans should expect and demand a rematch when Frank is healed up later this year or early next year.

Tim Sylvia Leaves the UFC, Fedor Talks Still in the Air

March 31, 2008

It seems that long time UFC heavyweight and ex champion Tim Sylvia has decided to leave the UFC and is expected to sign up with M-1 Global. Sylvia was released from his contract even though he has one fight left on it, there is speculation that UFC management were unhappy with Tim’s last few fights which were boring decisions for the most part.

UFC president Dana White held a press conference late last week stating Tim had in fact left the UFC and that he hopes to sign Fedor Emelianenko whom is arguably the best pound for pound fighter in the world. He holds a record of 27 wins and 1 no contest, 0 losses. Fedor was rumoured to have been signed last year by the UFC but instead took a contract with M-1 Global which sparked words from the UFC. It seems that it comes down to just business and Dana has officially announced they are still interested in signing the heavyweight whom is now a free agent because he never officially signed any contract with M-1 Global.

There is competition for the heavyweight though, EliteXC which recently signed a prime time broadcasting deal with CBS has their eye on him as well. Apparently they offered Fedor a 4 fight contract a large undisclosed sum of money and a take on the 2 pay per view events he would be required to fight in. Some fans are speculating if the UFC can afford to pay Fedor the amount that EliteXC will be able to if the broadcasting on prime time is a success for the league.

Fans have been hoping for a fight between Randy Couture and Fedor for years, Randy is currently locked in a legal battle with the UFC to get out of his contract partly because he wants to fight Fedor, the UFC will not allow Randy out of his contract and will not co promote a event between Randy and Fedor, the only way they will promote the match is if Fedor signs with them. Looks like the situation is picking up, Fedor should be signing with a MMA league in the next coming weeks. More information as it develops.

Kimbo’s next Opponent Could Be James Thompson

March 31, 2008

Most readers know by now that Elite XC has struck a television deal with CBS to air prime time MMA bouts. The first one is set to take place on Saturday the 31st of May from the Prudential Centre in Newark New jersey. Kimbo was announced awhile back as the main event however his opponent was never revealed. Speculation that it would be revealed at the recent co promotion by EliteXC and Strikeforce last Saturday, but no such announcement came.

it appears that the website www.5ounces0fpain.com has announced that the previously rumored combatant Ron Waterman would not be facing Kimbo due to contract issues. So the next leading candidate would be James Thomson. Some of you may remember him from Pride, he’s not doing so well these days though, with 6 losses in his last 8 fights.

So there you have it, it appears Kimbo’s opponent will be James Thompson, a bit disappointing for fans because of James current losing streak, but hey the more fights under Kimbo’s belt the better. Also on the fight card for the 31st of May is a middleweight championship fight between Robbie Lawler and Scott Smith, a bout between Murilo Rua and Phil Baroni and a woman’s league match with Gina Cerano and Kaitlin Young. More information on Kimbo’s opponent as it develops.

Marcus Davis Confirmed for UFC 85

March 28, 2008

Fans of “The Irish Hand Grenade” Marcus Davis are in for a treat on June 7th. Marcus has been confirmed in a match at the 02 arena in London, England against Mike “quick” Swick. The confirmation came today from Marcus’ management and was again echoed on Swicks myspace page.

Davis has been demonstrating his ability quite well in the UFC, he is a former boxer and Ultimate Fighter season two veteran. He will be looking to increase his already very impressive win streak of twelve wins with a win over Mike Swick. Even though Davis is a boxer at heart he has really shown his versatility in the octagon, six of his last eleven fights have been finished by submissions.

Mike Swick will be looking to stop Marcus in his tracks and end that win streak. This will be Swicks second fight after moving down to 170 pounds. Swick’s first fight at that weight was a decision win over Josh Burkman at ultimate fight night 12. Swick has gone on record as saying he was not happy with the way the fight went, neither were the fans that night. Swick says his old quick self will come out this June when he battles Marcus, fans are eager to see if Swick should go back to his old weight or not.

Josh Koscheck Resigns With The UFC

March 27, 2008

Fans of Ultimate Fighter Veteran Josh Koscheck can breath a sigh of relief. A couple of months ago, sources in the UFC stated Josh would not be resigned to the organization giving no reasons why. Sources close to the negotiations cited Josh has resigned a contract after his 9 fight original contract expired earlier this month with a impressive second round knockout win over Dustin Hazelett.  Details of his new contract are not yet available, but expect them soon.

Dustin Hazelett was Josh’s first bout back after a loss to former Welterweight champion Georges “Rush” St. Pierre. That loss cost Josh a five fight win streak and a shot at the welterweight belt. Koscheck’s record is now a respectable eight wins and two losses in the UFC.

Josh has a interesting following, it seems fans either love him or hate him, this could be due to his somewhat cocky attitude but, no matter how you feel about the Ultimate Fighter veteran, his record is nothing to scoff at and he has certainly established himself as a very well rounded fighter in his weight Division. There is speculation Josh will be fighting Christ Lytle in his first bout on the new contract. The match is expected to take place at UFC 86 which will be held in early July in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Serra on Georges St. Pierre

March 27, 2008

the current champion Matt “The Terra” Serra recently sat down with www.setantasports.com in a interview where he had some choice words for his next opponent Georges St. Pierre. As any UFC fan knows GSP lost his belt to Serra in their first meeting which had fans amazed and calling the win a fluke. Serra does not believe it was a fluke and makes some good points in his interview.

Serra mentions the alleged “lucky punch” that was the beginning of the end for GSP. He says he cannot understand how it is luck when you are aiming at something to punch, in this case GSP’s head and then he hit it, there was no luck involved. Serra believes he has been a great fighter all around and points out that any of his losses were close calls or he was winning the fight but got caught off guard. He claims he has never been dominated the way he dominated GSP in their last meeting. Matt Serra also believes he was shown little to no respect by GSP, he claims Georges made nothing but excuses after the fight which Matt felt was very disrespectful.

It should be pointed out that immediately after the match when Georges St. Pierre was interviewed and asked what happened he made no excuses, in fact, he praised Serra as the better fighter and seemed to give plenty of respect. There was no mention of any disrespect or excuses given by St. Pierre that this reporter recalls hearing, but perhaps they were overlooked. At any rate the  rematch is set to take place on April 19th in Montreal, Quebec, Canada live on pay per view.

Gary Shaw Looks to Snag UFC Fighters

March 26, 2008

There is no secret that Dana White and the UFC absolutely despise Gary Shaw and the Elite XC organization. It’s the single biggest competitor right now for the UFC and seems to have come out of nowhere. As many of you know the Elite XC has just signed a huge television deal with CBS to broadcast some of their events. Gary and Dana continue to trade verbal blows every chance they get and this time it’s Gary coming out swinging.

Seems that Gary believes that when his first televised event goes on in May without a hitch, he thinks that UFC fighters will flock over to Elite XC and sign with him. Gary believes that the potential to be watched by “100 million” viewers is a huge draw for any fighter and that the UFC simply can’t compete. Now, 100 million is a bit of a overstatement, but it is true that if they elite XC can get even a small percentage of that amount of viewers it would blow any UFC event out of the water. Gary believes the way he does business and the way he promises to treat the fighters will be another enticing reason to leave the UFC, he plans to let them make their real money from endorsements and sponsorships, which rely of course on the amount of viewers seeing them. Gary goes on to say no fighter has ever left the Elite XC league because “they are all treated like a royal prince” Of course no mention of the fact that Elite XC is a much younger league then the UFC. More information as it develops, Look for the first CBS Elite XC show in May.

Fedor Offered a Contract with EliteXC

March 26, 2008

Reliable sources today have announced that the Elite XC fight league, which has on it’s roster Kimbo Slice, has offered a 18 month contract to the Russian heavyweight fighter. The contract would require Fedor Emelianenko to fight 4 times within the 18 months.  Fedor’s first two fights would be broadcast on American TV and because of the television deal Elite XC and CBS had recently signed it would put Emelianenko immediately into the American spotlight. His last two fights would be aired on pay per view and it’s reported that the Elite XC would share a percentage of the pay per view earnings with Emelianenko.

This would be one heck of a deal for Fedor by the sounds of it. The problem being Elite XC does not have the calibre of fighters that Fedor would find challenging. This deal would also make the possibility of a single fight match for Fedor in the UFC so he can finally take on Randy Couture all but impossible. It seems that deal is on the fence anyways because of the animosity between Fedor and the UFC and of course Randy’s legal battles with the UFC as well. Fedor and his camp have kept fairly quiet about their intentions or where he will go, which is frustrating fans, so here is hoping he signs a new contract soon wherever it may be.

Don King Steps Forward, Offers to Promote Silva Versus Roy Jones Jr.

March 26, 2008

Well it was just a matter of time until more news on this huge story broke and here it is. Seems world famous boxing promoter Don King has stepped forward and offered to promote a boxing match between Roy Jones Jr. and Anderson Silva. It seems like Don King has contacted the UFC and made the offer rather then approaching Silva himself, which is probably a good idea because Dana White is bound to be fairly strict on how and where this fight will go down.

With the worlds biggest boxing promoter trying to get this fight to happen it seems like it’s only a matter of time now. There are really only two things that stand in the way of this fight happening. One, Roy backing out due to a pay cut in his match, boxers are paid a amazing amount of money for their fights especially when they are of Jones Calibre. It’s doubtful this would be an issue though because everyone is predicting this to be the biggest PPV event of all time. The other thing potentially standing in the way of the fight happening is Dana White and the UFC, he may be a bit wary of co promoting and dealing with all the problems that come with it, considering the headache that was the pride buyout. More information on this story as it develops.

YAMMA Pit Fighting League and Don Frye

March 24, 2008

Some interesting news has just arisen from the YAMMA pit fighting league. Don Frye was set to face off against Oleg Taktarov. Frye managed to injure his shoulder significantly enough to have to back out of the bout. Former UFC fighter Patrick Smith was to step in as a replacement for Don.

It does not look like Patrick will be fighting either, it seems he was recently in a high speed police chase in Sherman, Texas. When apprehended Patrick was charged with reckless driving, felony evasion and possession of a prescription drug without a valid prescription. Seems like this match is cursed, YAMMA should be releasing the name of yet another replacement, this time for Patrick Smith.

Some other bouts headlining the event include Butterbean versus Gary Goodridge and a huge 8 man heavyweight tournament, which should be very entertaining for the fans. More information on Patrick’s replacement as it develops.
